3 Reasons You’re an Artist:

Why I think that you aren’t just born an artist and my evolution as an artist.

One of my pet peeves is when artistic pursuits such as singing, acting, or painting are perceived as a skill that some are born with but others are not. The reason this confounds me is because when it comes to occupations such as a plumber, teacher or engineer they aren’t typically associated with the same idea. While genetics can play a role, your choice to dedicate yourself to a skillset plays a much larger role. No matter how good your genes are, they won’t get you anywhere if you don’t exercise your muscles.

1. No is born a Michelangelo

What I mean by this is think back to your first piece of art, whether in kindergarten or before. Was it anything like the Mona Lisa or David? No. Many great works of art were created after years of dedication and practice. Like any skill set, art requires consistent practice and improvement over time.

2. Created by the Creator

Whether we admit to it or not, we are made in the image of the ultimate Creator, which means we create in little ways every day whether we realize it or not. While this may sound like a cheesy concept, it’s Biblical! Creative doesn’t have to be associated with something artistic or visual, even in our conversations we are creating an experience and communicating a message through our words, just like in art.

3. Desire to Design

I admit that when it comes to more artistic pursuits, factors like our environment, personality, and preferences may have drawn us away. That is completely ok! Just like I don’t enjoy history but can still appreciate it, I don’t expect everyone to love doing art or dedicate their life to it. I think it’s fair to acknowledge the importance of a subject while acknowledging that you are not interested in the craft. To reiterate point 2, you don’t have to have a desire to practice the arts to be creative. Everyone is inherently creative, and you can choose to lean into that piece in an artistic way or in another way.

Does this make sense? I would love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below! Let me know your experiences.
